Some Editron motors can feature a so-called water leakage sensor in the bottom of the electric machine. This sensor is a rudimentary device that can be used to monitor if a significant amount of water or condensation is present inside the motor. The sensor provides two electrically isolated conductor leads inside the motor's internal cavity, and an external monitoring system can be connected to these leads to periodically or continuously measure the insulation between them.
| There is no internal functionality in the motor or the EC-C inverters for condensation monitoring, and the design and interpretation of the sensors usage must be done by the end user of the product. The water leakage sensors cannot be used to replace actual safety functions such as an insulation monitoring system and proper fuses for the components. They do not guarantee the safety of the motor in case a significant amount of condensation is present inside the motor. |
The principle of the measurement could be, for example:
- If there is no condensation in the motor, the electrical impedance between the leads is close to infinity (impedance of dry air).
- If there is some condensation or moist air inside the motor, the impedance will show slight reduction, likely in the mega- to gigaohm range.
- If the sensor is submerged in water, indicating a dangerous amount of condensation inside the motor, the impedance will be close to the nominal impedance of water. Depending on the purity and ion content of the water, this can range from milliohms to tens of kilo-ohms.
